A Little History About Our Owner

Tom Withers was born in Royal Oak, MI. His family left Michigan, like so many others, in the 1960’s after the riots. Through his business tenacity and acumen, Tom first made his mark in the world of telecommunications, selling and implementing voice and fiber optic systems in Texas at complexes like the Dallas Cowboys’ Valley Ranch facility and Baylor Hospital. Shortly thereafter, he and a few others began a company that would eventually be known as Skytel, the first nationwide pager with text capabilities; this technology paved the way for the cell phones and smart phones we know today.

Tom relocated back to Michigan in 1995, where, for 13 years, he owned and operated a successful business as a distributor for Rexair. The company grew to 14 outlets with hundreds of salespeople before succumbing to the destructive flames of the economic disaster that struck Michigan in 2008.

In 2009, a spark ignited when Tom took the reigns of a struggling company and began to fuel another flame, not in telecommunications or a distribution center, but in retailing fireplaces manufactured in the U.S. After having his own fireplace serviced, Tom loved the product so much that he decided to buy the company! Since 2009, FireSide Hearth & Home has seen tremendous growth, expanding from one original showroom (Utica) to our three current showrooms (Utica, Canton, and Royal Oak).
