History of the St. Clair Broiler

In the 1940's, the corner was the home of the St. Clair Sweet Shoppe where homemade candy and ice cream were the specialties of the house. Broiled hamburgers became the specialty of the St. Clair Broiler, which first opened it doors in 1956. One of the first restaurants to offer open-flame broiled burgers; “The Broiler” quickly became a popular gathering spot.

Arguably, the St. Clair Broiler’s finest moment came in June of 2000 as then Vice President and Presidential Candidate Al Gore stopped by for a strategy session with state Democratic leaders and to sample a hot fudge malt. Vice President Gore was so impressed with the malt that he ordered two more malts to go for his staff to eat on the plane.

In August of 2006 the St. Clair Broiler was sold by longtime owner Jimmy Theros to his cousin also named Jimmy Theros and his son Charlie. The latter two Theroses have made their reputation at Rudolphs Bar-B-Que in Minneapolis. The new Jimmy and Charlie have been busy working on a new menu design, new menu items, new plating, new silverware and putting a new spin a local favorite. You can even get Rudolphs Bar-B-Que’s famous spare ribs and cole slaw at “The Broiler”. This summer the St. Clair Broiler will get a remodeling that will feature new carpeting, chairs, tables, lighting and a brand new counter to enjoy the many favorites for which “The Broiler” has become famous.

Today, the St. Clair Broiler continues to serve the greatest hamburgers and malts in St. Paul. The diverse menu includes a variety of the most popular sandwiches in the Twin Cities and of course, the Broiler's great desserts. 59 years after it opened, the St. Clair Broiler is still family owned, still making great hamburgers and getting ready to serve all those delicious homemade offerings for another 59 years.
